Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

The Darkest Minds trilogy by Alexandra Bracken consists of: The Darkest Minds, Never Fade, and an Unknown Novel due to be released December 2014 and also a short story called In Time. The movie rights have already been purchased as well.

Summary

"When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government "rehabilitation camp." She might have survived the mysterious disease that's killed most of America's children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.
Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones."

Review

Darkest Minds is a wonderful example of a young adult novel which explores the ideas of fear, power, and love. The main character is plagued with fear, not only of others, but of herself. To the point where she hides who she truly is. Finally she begins to accept herself, and is accepted by her friends and love interest. Darkest Minds is a great tale of friendships, where the characters become a close group of friends willing to help and risk everything for each other. All of the main characters develop and grow, together and individually. I really enjoy this story, and look forward to discovering more about how the 'disease' was created and how the main characters will survive in their world.
